I have many days in my life where I notice my breathing is off. I also notice that when this happens I have extreme anxiety and feel very irritable.
Have you ever noticed this yourself?
If you found this article you probably have.
You see, when anxiety kicks in the biggest culprit is usually your breathing. Gotta get back to breathing naturally to slay those anxiety demons.
To do this it is important to first become aware of how you are breathing. I tend to breathe very shallow at times and stop on the out-breath, which is not natural.
The natural way to breathe is from your diaphragm (belly) in a slow rhythmic manner. Like the Buddha.
Breathing deep in a natural manner induces a calmness within you that is going to kill your anxiety. It is also going to have a million benefits, like the ability to have a focused mind and abundant energy.
Here is a problem I ran into. Focusing on my breathing to make sure that I was actually breathing caused me to breath in what felt like was a forced manner. I was not breathing naturally.
So how did I fix this problem? By not focusing on my breathing at all.
Let me ask you this. Is it the breathing that is not right or is it the anxious mind? I ask this because anxiety can be primarily caused by anxious thoughts of the future.
Think And Stop Anxiety
You are being anxious because you are anticipating (thinking) a future outcome and lack the patience for its arrival. Which is why “get rich quick” schemes are so popular, people lack the patience to build a business that will bear fruit in the future (they want it now).
Being able to relax those anxious thoughts requires not a breathing practice but a thinking practice. Of course you will want to be aware of how you are breathing. This is so you can realize, “hey, my breathing is off and I am getting anxious again”.
What I realized is that in order to fix my breathing I need to meditate.
There are breathing meditations, but like I said they tend to cause an unnatural breathing pattern to develop. What is needed is a meditation to control the thoughts of the mind.
Watch Your Thoughts
Simply sit in a comfortable position and just let the thoughts of your mind be. Do not be attached to them but do not follow them. You might forget and begin to let your mind wander but do not worry, just get back to witnessing your thoughts.
This is the first step in beginning to control your anxious thoughts so that you can get to a calm and collected state of mind.
When you practice this daily you will find that your breathing is getting back to normal. Other spectacular results will be enormous amounts of energy and a determination to achieve anything you want in life.
You will bring back patience in your life, something anxious people like myself need more than anything. A sense of calm purpose will come over you and you will have realized that it was all in your mind the whole time.
You took control of your mind and now you look at anxiety like a slain dragon.
What are you waiting for?
Take control of your mind!
